I did another brick workout yesterday consisting of 12 miles of biking followed by 3 miles of running. And I smashed it!
I don't think I've ever felt that good running after biking. I don't know if the conditions were just extremely perfect for it yesterday or if I'm finally getting used to the heavy legs. I ran for about 16 minutes before having to stop to walk which I was pretty impressed with. Between 16 minutes and 22 minutes I had to take a few 30 second walk breaks. Once I hit the 2 mile marker, I picked up my pace and killed it. I ran a 10:13 mile the last mile which is fast for me. My overall time was 33:59. My running is improving and that is great to see!
I had a conversation with my friend the other day who is also training for a triathlon. We were discussing what we think our weakest sport is out of the three. Mine changes on a day-to-day basis. Lately, I've been feeling like the bike is my weakest area. No matter how hard I work, my average speed for the bike ride is just not increasing. I'm stuck around 13.5 mph. While this is great, as the race gets closer and closer, I realize how much I want to do a good job and have a competitive time. Since the most time is spent on the bike, and I feel like I have a weak bike time, this is NO BUENO!
While I would love to upgrade my current hybrid bike to a real road bike, I don't happen to have $1200 sitting around. I'm exploring different possibilities to make my hybrid more efficient, including looking at clipless pedals and shoes. The nice thing about that option is that the pedals and shoes will be able to be used on a road bike when I buy one down the road.
Decisions, decisions! Don't even get me started on what I think I'm going to wear for the actual race...there are so many possibilities!
