First 5K...Done!

Woo Hoo!  I raced my first official 5K yesterday downtown Grand Rapids at the 35th Fifth Third Riverbank Run.

I was super nervous on the drive up to GR.  I didn't sleep much the night before and since this was my first race, I didn't really know what to expect as far as getting there, what to do with my stuff, checking in, etc.  Luckily, everything was went fine and before I knew it- it was time to line up!  There were SO MANY PEOPLE (5629 to be exact!) and the energy was like nothing else I've ever experience before.

The national anthem was sang, the countdown started, and we were off!  My goals for the race were 1- to not have to stop and walk.  2- to have a better time than when I ran a 5K at home a few weeks ago.  And 3- to not come in last (I'm sure that's probably everyone's goal!).

The weather was perfect for running, low 60's, a little breeze, and no heat from the sun since the sky was cloudy.  There were 2 hills- the first one, right after the first mile, was not too difficult since it was still early in the run.  The second hill was a different story.  It was a slow, gradual hill just past the 2 miler marker and at that point I was getting pretty tired.  I pushed and pushed and just told myself that I had to make to the top and that then I'd almost be to the finish line!

I didn't stop to walk AND I finished about a minute faster than when I ran a 5K at home.  My official time was 34:53.

Notice at the top that the fastest time was 14:39!  Are you kidding me?!??!?!  That is super fast, I can't even comprehend how a human being can run that fast!  I guess I have something to work towards.  ;)

After the race I met my parents for breakfast.  I was starving, and it was delicious!

All in all I am super happy and proud of myself.  My first 5K is done!
